About Northstar Family and Behavioral Health
Northstar Family and Behavioral Health was established to provide personalized, compassionate, and holistic mental health care to individuals and families throughout Utah. The practice is dedicated to delivering evidence-based counseling and medication management while recognizing the unique needs, values, and circumstances of each patient.
Timothy McCreary, DMSc, PA-C, CAQ-PSYCH, holds the psychiatric endorsement recognized by the Utah Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing. He has been practicing medicine since 2005 and has extensive clinical experience in both family medicine and behavioral health.
Throughout his career, PA McCreary has cared for individuals and families experiencing a broad range of mental health and life challenges, including crisis, grief, mood disorders, trauma, neurocognitive and developmental disorders, substance use disorders, alcohol use disorders, and adjustment disorders. His background in family medicine also provides a strong foundation for understanding the important connection between physical health, mental health, and overall well-being. Early in his career, he cared for thousands of patients with chronic medical conditions, an experience that continues to inform his integrated and holistic approach to behavioral health.
In addition to his clinical practice, PA McCreary has served as the director of a psychiatry training program for PA clinicians and has taught advanced coursework in neuroscience and psychotherapy since 2019. He brings extensive training in psychopharmacology and psychotherapy to his clinical practice.
His therapeutic approach incorporates Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Emotion-Focused Therapy, grounded in a person-centered philosophy. He also draws from principles of positive psychology, emphasizing patients' strengths, resilience, personal values, and capacity for meaningful change.
PA McCreary is certified by the Neuroscience Education Institute as a Master in Psychopharmacology. He has extensive experience with the safe, thoughtful, and evidence-based use of psychiatric medications, including antidepressants, mood stabilizers, stimulants, buprenorphine, and other pharmacologic treatments when clinically appropriate.
At Northstar Family and Behavioral Health, the goal is to provide thoughtful, individualized care that addresses the whole person—not simply a diagnosis. Through the integration of psychotherapy, medication management, and an understanding of each patient's broader medical and personal circumstances, Northstar seeks to help individuals and families move toward greater health, stability, and well-being.

Dr. McCreary has been incredibly helpful in managing my OCD and anxiety. He takes the time to listen, never makes me feel rushed or dismissed, and I feel comfortable being completely honest about what I am experiencing. He is knowledgeable, compassionate, and approachable.

I've worked with Tim McCreary for counseling and medication covering depression, grief, low self-esteem, substance abuse and recovery, and periods of deep despair accompanied by suicidal thoughts. While all of his help has been beneficial, what stands out most is how steady, practical, and non-judgmental he has been through all of it. He never treated any of these issues in isolation; he helped me understand how they were interconnected and how addressing them together made real progress possible. He showed me how to find hope and value in myself, and he gave me concrete tools I could actually use day to day.
His guidance has been a major factor in my ability to stay substance-free, rebuild my sense of identity and self-worth, and move forward in both my personal and professional life. I'm now working full-time in education again, maintaining my recovery, and I am in a strong, supportive marriage. I credit a significant part of that progress to the work we did together.
I recommend him without hesitation to anyone who needs a skilled counselor or buprenorphine prescriber who is genuinely invested in their patients' long-term well-being.
